以告知为目的灾害报道不仅有较强的时效要求，而且所提供的内容应当准 确无误，即在第一时间把灾害发生的准确时间、地点、人员伤亡等信息传递 给受众。由于地震灾害往往事发突然，中文发稿需要尽快播发，因而篇幅较 长。作为英文编译的译者就有必要去粗取精，概括要点，整合翻译。编译过 程中的全部问题实际还是归结为“怎样使用目标语写作的问题”（Newmark, 2001: 17)。
例1：5月12日，中国西部发生强烈地震，震中位于汶川县，数以千计的民宅、工厂、学校倒塌，该县近80%的建筑被毁。
这句话从汉语的句法结构来看，客观上依次存在“中国西部” “震中”“民 宅、工厂、学校”和“建筑”等几个主语，如果转译时一一照用，译成an earthquake took place in western China, the epicenter was in Wenchuan County and 等，便会由 于小句过多，导致结构松散、主次不分，削弱表达效果。而且，有别于中文的 表达，作为特大的地震，英语中不是一般的“发生”happen,而是一种凶狠的“打 击” strike,翻译时首先就要抓住“地震”这一罪魁祸首的特点，而将“倒塌”、 “被毁”及其他后果归于地震的破坏。译文：
On May 12, a powerful earthquake struck Western China, with its epicenter in the county of Wenchuan. Thousands of houses, factories and schools were toppled and nearly 80 percent of the buildings in the countryside were destroyed.
例2：星期一主震以来还发生了数百次余震，中国将震级由7.8级提高到8.0 级，相当于700多颗核弹的当量。
准确是新闻报道的基本要求，但灾害的发生和发展往往是一个变化的过程, 准确并不排除适时的调整。相反，为追求报道的准确，有必要在跟踪报道中不 断根据事实的变化调整报道的情况或数据。普通大众对于震级不会有太多的了 解，也很少有亲身的体验，“将震级由7.8级提高到8.0级”恐怕一般人士也难 以感受到“7.8级”和“8.0级”之间到底有多大的差距。编译时用“相当于700 多颗核弹的当量”来进行解释，就足以让读者很清楚地想象出这次地震的恐怖 程度。引用这些数据可以准确地说明地震的破坏力，在编辑与翻译的过程中始终 要将文本视为社会性的事件（social events)，“特别关注译文的动机（motivation) 和连贯（coherence)”。翻译公司译员试译：
